Net Worth Update October 2018

Net worth update as of October 31, 2018
Wow, 6 months have passed again and here we are with another 6 month update.

As I detailed in previous posts, we maxed out our registered accounts (TFSA, RRSP, & RESP). As a result, we started to pay down our mortgage more aggressively. In total, from April to October 2018, we have paid an extra $27,132.58 into the mortgage with a combination of lump sum and double-up payments. Overall, our mortgage dropped by $33,751.65 and our total remaining mortgage balanced dipped to under $250,000. Not a gigantic milestone, but it's nice to say that total debt is a quarter of a million dollars. Not as good as no debt, but we're making progress.

Aside from that, paying down out mortgage had the biggest impact on our net worth. Our net worth went up $56,422.58. Our house was a small portion of that. The rest of the money came from our investments. Investments did well after the dip in February. However, most of those gains were lost in the last two months. In addition to the mortgage dropping, you can see a dip from September to October of our Investments and Cash balance.

Aside from having our investment accounts coast until the new year when we'll be able to deposit additional funds, we've received money in dividends and distributions that we've used to mostly rebalance our portfolios. It's not easy as the US stocks surged well ahead of bonds and our international holdings. The Canadian portion of our portfolio held steady with a consistent 10% for most of this period.

Aside from that, I'm expecting a decent tax return for wifey next March due to her extra overtime hours she pulled over the summer for a major project at work. I'm not sure how much, but I estimate at minimum $3,000. We'll see what happens for the next update.

The following is a summary of the numbers for the October 2018 update:

  • Net worth: $642,899.32 (+$56,422.58)
  • Total Assets: $891,519.08 (+$22,670.93)

  • RESP/Pensions: $67,329.90 (+$9,284.61)
  • Remaining Mortgage: $248,619.76 (-$33,751.65)
